Why would God create an individual who couldn't distinguish good from evil and then condemn him because of that condition? The syndrome that describes this disorder used to be called sociopathy, although it is now referred to as "antisocial personality disorder" (ASPD). People with this disorder are defined by the American Psychological Association as exhibiting "a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood." Young earth creationists say most of those craters happened during the flood. Is this what the Bible and science say? What about the cratering event that destroyed the dinosaurs and 75% of all species on earth? The presence of craters is actually one of the easier to understand arguments against young earth creation "science" and one of the most powerful refutations of young earth Bible interpretation. What had seemed obvious to me—that Adam was AWOL at the time Satan approached her—wasn't convincing to Claretta. She pointed out that Genesis 3:6 says, "...she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, <em>who was with her</em>, and he ate it" (emphasis added). If one only reads that part of the story, it would seem like an open and shut case that Adam was with her the whole time. When people are called by God, we usually expect them to respond to the call and begin the process leading to <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/doctrine/salvat.html">salvation</a>. The puzzling phrase, "For many are called, but few are chosen" comes in the conclusion of Jesus' parable of the wedding feast. What was Jesus referring to when he made this statement? During my free time, I have spent many hours researching and writing an article on <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/genetically_modified_food.html">genetically modified food</a>. There is a lot of bad information on the Internet on GM food. Keith Kloor of <em>Slate</em> recently made the observations that "GMO opponents are the climate skeptics of the left." Although genetic modification of food does not have a lot of spiritual application, Christians should be knowledgeable about where science and technology are headed. GMO have the potential to revolutionize farming and increase the healthiness of our food supply. However, radical environmentalists and the health food industry are serving up bad science and scare tactics to keep science at bay. Mostly, I am a computer Geek, having been so since the time that personal computers were first invented, several decades ago. I am also a science nerd, since I work full-time in a medical science research lab. Until recently, it was not possible to meld my geekiness with my Christian faith. Belote's book is an examination of Christian theology using an amazing array of clever examples from the worlds of engineering, science, and science fiction. Even if you aren't a Geek, if you know a Geek, this would make a <em>great</em> gift. In August, I went to a lecture by Answers in Genesis' Terry Mortenson and got very annoyed by many of the inaccurate statements he made about science and the Bible. As a result, I wrote two articles, one on plant death and a second on the methods of science. In addition, we have an amazing article by Rodney Whitefield, which blows the lid off young earth claims about Genesis 1 and the age of the earth. That article should be required reading for all young earth creationists. Enjoy!</p> <h3>Genesis 1 & age of the earth</h3> <p> <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/youngearth/genesis_one_age_earth.html"><img alt="READING GENESIS ONE: Comparing Biblical Hebrew with English Translation" height="120" src="http://www.godandscience.org/images/books/reading_genesis_one.jpg" width="80" style="float: right" /></a>This month we have a real treat from guest author Rodney Whitefield. Dr. Whitefield is a physicist by trade, but has also studied biblical Hebrew extensively. Whitefield has done an amazing job analyzing the Hebrew text of Genesis 1 to delineate how the text addresses the question of the age of the earth. In this article, he shows how</p> <ul> <li>young earth creationists' use of Exodus 20:11 relies upon the insertion of English words, not found in the original Hebrew.</li> <li>the Hebrew verbs "bara" and "asah" are not interchangeable in the creation account, contrary to young earth claims.</li> <li>the Hebrew phrase "in the beginning" does not imply instantaneous creation, contrary to young earth claims.</li> <li>young earth creationism was invented in the 1960's in order to attempt to get around long time periods required for evolutionary theories.</li> <li>the primary meaning of "yom" is "daylight," with the second most prevalent  meaning being "a long period of time." "Yom" almost never refers to a 24-hour period of time, except in reference to the Sabbath.</li> <li>the use of <span>"yom" with a following non-prefixed number is <em>unique</em> to Genesis 1:1-31, contrary to the claims of young earth creationists, who say it <em>always</em> refers to a 24-hour day elsewhere in the Bible.</span></li> <li>the current young earth interpretation of Genesis 1 is <span> inconsistent with the Hebrew text.</span></li> </ul> <p>If you know a young earth creationist who thinks old earthers are the compromisers, send him here! They want their followers to believe that all the scientists are wrong about the age of the earth even though the science that produces such data reliably powers all our amazing modern technology. How can modern technology work so well when the science behind it is all wrong? Obviously, if the science were wrong, the technology would not work. In order to attempt to get around this problem, AIG has invented an artificial distinction between what they call "origins science" (or "historical science") and "operational science" (or "experimental science," which AIG mistakenly calls "observational science"). However, in certain countries, all health-related statistics and mortality statistics are maintained by the government and available for analysis. The statistics from all women born between 1962 and 1993 in Denmark were analyzed to determine the mortality rates of women following childbirth, miscarriage or abortion, finding that abortion was, by far, more likely to result in subsequent death. Numerous recent studies, authored by gay scientists, have shown that children of gay parents fare identically to children of straight parents. However, all of these studies have suffered from the fact that the sampled populations were not randomly selected, largely because few gay parents actually exist. So, investigators have used advertising (mostly online and in gay magazines) in order to recruit enough subjects to study. However, such methods tend to sample a more educated population of subjects compared to randomized sampling. Another deficit of such studies is that the parents themselves have reported the outcomes of their parenting results. Needless to say, no gay parent would want to damage the image of gay parenting. A new study by Mark Regnerus has selected 3,000 study participants randomly by telephone in order to reduce sampling bias. In addition, the participants are the <em>children</em> who report on their respective parents. At this point, over 6,000 individuals have taken and completed the quiz, providing a statistically significant sampling of the performance of individuals from different denominations. These data were used to assess whether there are differences in Bible literacy among parishioners of various Christian denominations. The results showed that non-denominational Christians were highly overrepresented among Bible Quiz participants. Those believers, along with Baptist believers exhibited significantly higher Bible knowledge than Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and Methodists. Even so, visitors to the Evidence for God theology quiz from <em>all denominations</em> scored much higher on a general religious knowledge survey compared to those who took the Pew Forum U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey in 2010. I told him that his skeptical worldview was being overturned by science and sent him links to our recent articles on <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/evolution/earth_early_atmosphere.html"> Earth's Early Atmosphere</a> (<a href="2011-12.html">last email update</a>) and <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/why_is_there_something.html"> Something Instead of Nothing</a> (<a href="http://www.godandscience.org/newsletters/2012-02.html">current newsletter</a>). Of course, he didn't read articles, but rebutted them anyway (which he got completely wrong). When I pointed out his errors, he wrote back saying, "Hey Richard, you ####### #######, stop sending me your emails." These are powerful new arguments that skeptics do not have an answer for. The "app" has links to common destinations, along with a list of the ten latest articles.</p> <hr /> <h2 id="reviews"> Reviews</h2> <h3> Answers in Creation</h3> <p> <a href="http://www.answersincreation.org"> <img alt="Answers in Creation" height="64" src="http://www.answersincreation.org/logo1.jpg" style="float: right" width="294" />Answers in Creation</a> is a Christian ministry devoted to providing evidence for the validity of the Christian faith from science and support for the old earth interpretation of the scriptures. A major component of the ministry is a critical analysis of young earth claims. After 9 years of ministry, <a href="http://www.answersincreation.org">Answers in Creation</a> has received the notice of Ken Ham and Answers in Genesis. In his October 2011 newsletter, Ken Ham accused <a href="http://www.answersincreation.org">Answers in Creation</a> of choosing "a name that is obviously designed to mimic (and even be confused with) Answers in Genesis." Answers in Genesis followed up this accusation with a <a href="http://www.answersincreation.org/Letter1.pdf">letter to the ministry</a> from their attorneys t elling them to change their name (with the implied threat that failure to do so might result in legal action). However, <a href="http://www.answersincreation.org">Answers in Creation</a> has used their name for the last 9 years, with virtually no prior notice by AIG. In early November, she had to be admitted to the hospital, suffering from an inability to walk and converse normally. Although the doctors didn't find a specific cause, she has been having more severe seizures. Carole is now home and receiving physical therapy, which has allowed her to get around, and is slowly continuing to improve. The movie examines attitudes toward what happened during the Jewish Holocaust and the current abortion Holocaust. Several Jewish groups were very unhappy that Christians had the nerve to compare the Holocaust deaths of 6 million Jews to the deaths of 55 million souls through abortion. Warning: the movie is not suitable for children, since it contains disturbing images. Last month I received a number of complaints about my stance on the Trinity. "The word Trinity is not found in the Bible" seems to be the standard mantra. Well, the word "<a href="http://www.godandscience.org/doctrine/gravity.html">gravity</a>" is not found in the Bible either, so is it a heretical concept? One guy thought there were two separate gods—The Son and the Father. Another was convinced that Jesus could not be God and the the Holy Spirit wasn't really anything other than God's Spirit (even though the Bible says God <em>is</em> Spirit, making the Holy Spirit the Spirit of God's Spirit—a dizzying proposition!). There are actually <em>hundreds</em> of verses that support the doctrine of the Trinity. As a Christian, you <em>are</em> going to be challenged on the Trinity at some point in your spiritual walk, so you best be prepared. Although more recent studies have suggested this assumption might not be true, a <em>Nature</em> study now directly shows that the earth did <em>not</em> have a reducing atmosphere up to 4.35 billion years ago—even before the beginning of the late heavy bombardment and the first evidence for the origin of life. The act modifies the informed consent requirements for a woman seeking an abortion by requiring providers to make certain information available to a woman seeking an abortion at least 24 hours in advance of the procedure, and to perform an ultrasound at least four hours in advance of the procedure, during which time the provider must make the images produced from the ultrasound visible to the patient and must describe to the patient the images seen on the ultrasound. The requirements seem innocuous enough, but abortion advocates know that informed consent is the last thing they want to tell a patient who is paying for an abortion. Searching for a theory of everything</a></em>, is not another cynical atheistic diatribe. Although Andrews has a pile of initials after his name (BSc, PhD, DSc, FInstP, FIMMM, CEng, CPhys), he is a witty, engaging author and theologian, in addition to scientist. Although Andrews takes on the new atheists, the main thrust of <em><a href="http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/who_made_god.html">Who made God?</a></em> is an apologetic of how the Bible fits into modern science (or how the Bible predicted the discoveries of modern science). Much of the book is quite witty, although some of it is understated, so you need to pay attention. Like a certain modern "prophet" of late, William Miller had predicted that Jesus Christ would return in 1843. After his prophetic failure, Miller realized he had accounted for an extra year between 1 BC and 1 AD, extending his prediction to 1844 (although 5 of his "proofs" did not fall under this error). Along with the idea that Jesus would return was the claim that the door of salvation had been shut to sinners in 1844. The view was prevalent until 1851, when it was abandoned. Mr. Ringer presented this paper to the 1982 Southern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, for which he was promptly excommunicated from the Adventist Church. However, the experience led Mr. Ringer on a quest to understand the Bible more deeply, eventually leading him to become a full-time Bible translator in Africa. In this book, Ron du Preez claims that the Sabbath<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"> mentioned in Colossians 2ː16 refer to annual sabbaths, rather than the weekly Sabbath, allowing Seventh Day Adventists to assert that the monthly new moons and the yearly feasts or appointed times that God gave to Israel indeed foreshadowed the reality that Christ would bring, while insisting that Paul was speaking of a yearly ceremonial Sabbath like the Day of Atonement. This allows them to maintain that the weekly Sabbath was given before man sinned and therefore cannot foreshadow the salvation from sin that Christ would bring. Since the weekly Sabbath is not a shadow of Christ, it must still be kept today. When he came out with a new book on theology, I thought it was worth a read. <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/doctrine/divine_providence.html"><em>Four Views on Divine Providence</em></a> is actually part of a series of books by multiple Christian authors on controversial theological topics. Four prominent theologians (Paul Kjoss Helseth, William Lane Craig, Ron Highfield, and Gregory Boyd) tackle the question of the extent of God's providence, advocating the positions, "God causes all things," "God directs everything," God controls by liberating," and "God limits his control," respectively. The really good thing about the book is how each author critiques the other's arguments. The editor, Dennis Jowers provides a nice introduction to the topic, including a historical perspective on the writings of Christians throughout the centuries. In order to promote the series, Francesca Stavrakopoulou, admitted atheist at the Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter, and "star" of the series revived the tired old atheist claim that God had a wife in ancient Israeli worship. Although the scholars claim the Bible was trying to hide goddess worship in Israel, the Bible actually states dozens of times that the Israelites turned to other gods and idol worship on multiple occasions (obviously, a well-guarded "secret"). By the way, the Bible actually says outright that God <em>has</em> a wife, although His "wife" is <em>not</em> Asherah or any other cultic goddess. During its short lifetime, it's hinges died twice (second time was fatal), the battery died twice, the power adapter died twice, the display died once, and the system had to be "recovered" numerous times. I can't say I was real sad to see it go. My usual strategy for replacing a laptop has been to get something good but not state of the art. However, this strategy has resulted in laptops being replaced every 3-4 years, on average (a Compaq, a Dell, a Sony, and a HP) as they became unbearably slow. A relatively new phenomenon in laptops is the "gaming" laptop. Although I don't play computer games, these laptops are designed for fast performance under demanding conditions. Asus has come out with some reasonably-priced gaming laptops that seem well-built, so I went for one. It is an amazing machine that has helped increase my productivity a lot. However, NASA announced that they had "found" a bacterium that used arsenic in place of phosphorus. It was not surprising that a bacterium would incorporate arsenic into its biomolecules - even humans can do that. Arsenic lies just below phosphorus on the periodic table of elements, meaning that it is chemically similar to other elements in its column. Originally promoted as "superstring" theory 20 years ago, it has evolved from "strings" to "membranes," although all forms of the theory propose extra dimensions (11, in fact). How one can test such a nebulous set of theories, which "predict" just about anything and everything, seems to be a problem. Vulcan Materials, an aggregate mining company, wants to strip mine a mountain only a few thousand feet from homes and an elementary school. They have falsified some of the critical data in the environmental impact report (EIR) and the "independent" consultant Lilburn Corporation, hired by the city, has also falsified data in the EIR. Originally believing that I was the only evangelical Christian opposed to the mining plan, I have discovered that most of the opponents are Christians. We had a great prayer time in front of City Hall before the first City Council meeting. This time the myth is that the apostle Paul invented Christianity and Christian doctrines. In addition to the short teaching on this topic, two recent scientific studies were examined - one on the "Evolution" of Fairness and Punishment and a second on the paper, "Universal Plausibility Metric and Universal Plausibility Principle". The first study shows that Christianity has more influence on people's fairness than market integration (trading for food). The second study examines the question of whether extremely small probabilities (as would apply to the design of the universe or the original of life) should be considered scientifically plausible. The author calculates the most extreme probability that could be considered scientifically plausible based upon the age, size, mass and maximum quantum events of the universe and concludes that anything with a probability of less than 1 in 10<sup><span class="style2">140</span></sup> must be rejected as scientifically plausible. At this point, all my accounts are online - other than the medical bills, which, apart from Quest Diagnostics, haven't seemed to have caught up with the times. Although most people go paperless as a means of "saving trees," my primary motivation for the switch is the ability to download all the information, so that it can be organized and searched in preparing and reconciling personal taxes and accounting. Everything I need is on my computer, and I can find it in a matter of seconds. It's a great system, except if somebody were to steal my laptop. The criminal (or the person who bought the stolen laptop) would have complete access to <em>all</em> my personal accounts and medical records. So, it has been a worry of mine for some time. So, how do you secure data so that it cannot be accessed if your laptop is stolen? I have been using our Facebook page as a sort of mini-blog. Pages on the God and Science website are updated on a constant basis, whenever new studies are published. Most of these updates don't make the newsletter, but I have been including them on our Facebook page for those who might be interested in the latest research that impacts articles previously published on the website. It is very cool. If you have your own website or blog, it is a great addition to your site.</p> <p>My wife Carole has just finished her fifth round of chemotherapy for a <a href="http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/godswork.html#Brain"> brain tumor</a> that had begun to grow again. An MRI yesterday showed that the tumor is still dormant. On October 18, I gave a talk on the subject of natural evil and the existence of God. Al, the resident atheist of the class was asking his usual critical questions until about halfway through the talk when he became very quiet. By that point is was becoming increasingly apparent that the atheists' argument against God's existence from the presence of natural evil was spurious, since natural evil is a rare consequence of the laws of physics and the design of the earth that make the existence of spiritual beings possible at all. How does God judge between one baby and another? However, in thinking about where pornography might take us in the future, I wrote an article that includes a possible scenario that I find utterly frightening - a world in which humans prefer the company of machines over each other to meet their needs. A recent study found the widespread acceptance of pornography among today's young adults as "an acceptable way to express one's sexuality." Couple this acceptance with a high tech android capable of fulfilling any sexual desire and there is a realistic expectation for human disaster in the near future.
