Discovery Institute book
Science and Human Origins is the recent book by the Discovery Institute on human origins. Although the Discovery Institute tends to stick to intelligent design without defining the Designer, this new offering seems to be aimed specifically at Christians. In fact, the final chapter is entitled, "The Science of Adam and Eve." Is Discovery siding with the creationists or just attempting to market to a larger audience? More...
Old earth creationism?
Guest author Jon Greene presents an overview of the biblical case for old earth creationism. One of the most fundamental doctrines held dear by Christians is God’s creation of the world and all living creatures. Yet among evangelicals, an ongoing controversy exists regarding the age of the earth and when God created the universe and life. Indeed, the “young-earth” vs. “old-earth” debate is one of the most polarizing and divisive issues within the Christian community. This paper presents the biblical case for “old-earth creationism” (OEC) and endeavors to clear up theological misconceptions regarding OEC held by many well-intentioned “young-earth creationist” believers. The purpose is not to dissuade young-earth believers from their position, but rather to propose OEC as a well-reasoned, Bible-honoring view that has been embraced by scholars such as Francis Schaeffer, James Boice, and Norman Geisler. Adam's sin and suffering
Young earth organizations blame all the bad things in the world on Adam and Eve's original sin. According to those groups, sin resulted in animal and human death, the growth of weeds, animals becoming carnivorous, and all manner of diseases and natural disasters. In essence, Adam is blamed for everything bad in the world, relieving God of the blame for all the suffering and "answering" atheist's charges that there is too much evil in the world for a good God to exist. Does the Bible really blame Adam's sin for all the bad things in the world? More...
One of the arguments made by those who oppose gay marriage is that homosexual parenting produces children with social and other deficits compared with children raised by heterosexual parents. Numerous recent studies, authored by gay scientists, have shown that children of gay parents fare identically to children of straight parents. However, all of these studies have suffered from the fact that the sampled populations were not randomly selected, largely because few gay parents actually exist. So, investigators have used advertising (mostly online and in gay magazines) in order to recruit enough subjects to study. However, such methods tend to sample a more educated population of subjects compared to randomized sampling. Another deficit of such studies is that the parents themselves have reported the outcomes of their parenting results. Needless to say, no gay parent would want to damage the image of gay parenting. A new study by Mark Regnerus has selected 3,000 study participants randomly by telephone in order to reduce sampling bias. In addition, the participants are the children who report on their respective parents. More...
As most of you probably know, I have had an online Basic Christian Theology Quiz for many years. At this point, over 6,000 individuals have taken and completed the quiz, providing a statistically significant sampling of the performance of individuals from different denominations. These data were used to assess whether there are differences in Bible literacy among parishioners of various Christian denominations. The results showed that non-denominational Christians were highly overrepresented among Bible Quiz participants. Those believers, along with Baptist believers exhibited significantly higher Bible knowledge than Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and Methodists. Even so, visitors to the Evidence for God theology quiz from all denominations scored much higher on a general religious knowledge survey compared to those who took the Pew Forum U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey in 2010. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their measuring line goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world." (Psalm 19:1-4)
