The Los Angeles Chapter of Reasons To Believe is going through the RTB video series If God Made the Universe. If you live in the Los Angeles area, please stop by for the study and some good Christian fellowship:
Monday, October 7, 2013, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

I gave two talks in Paradoxes Sunday School Class, the preparation for which took up most of my time since the last newsletter. The first was The Singularity: Eternal Life for Atheists? and the second was Born Gay? Is Homosexuality Genetic/Biological? Both are available as PowerPoint slides and an MP3 audio (see below).
Flight: The Genius of Birds
Flight: The Genius of Birds is the first episode in Illustra Media's new series The Design of Life. They are going to be hard-pressed to top the sheer beauty of the photography and animations found in their first movie. Although the series is about design, the video doesn't wallop you over the head about the design aspects. Instead, the designs of flight are quite obvious just from the very informative topics covered. I have been lending out my copy of the video to about 10 people, most of whom are scientists, and even the skeptics have been really impressed with the quality and content. More...
Darwin's Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design is the new book by Stephen Meyer of the Discovery Institute. The book's title is taken from Charles' Darwin's concern that his theory could not explain the lack of potential ancestors of animals appearing prior to what has been called the Cambrian explosion. During this brief period of time (~10 million years), numerous phyla (the highest classification scheme below "kingdom") of complex animals with novel body plans suddenly appeared from nowhere. Although additional classes of animals appeared subsequent to the Cambrian explosion, all animal phyla (both extant and extinct) originated at that time. So, is the Cambrian explosion still a problem for neo-Darwinian evolution? More...
Evolution vs. God
Ray Comfort's new movie, Evolution vs. God: Shaking the Foundations of Faith is an attempt to show that evolution requires more faith than theism. Through a series of highly edited interviews with scientists and students, Comfort hopes to show that the foundations of evolution do not hold up. However, the movie is more likely to be believed by gullible young earth creationists than serious scientists or atheists. The primary format of the movie consists of snippets of interviews—mostly of young college students who didn't really seem to know much about evolution. Even though I don't believe in macroevolution, I could have given better answers than the students included in the movie. More...
Signature in the Cell
Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design is not what I had original thought it would be. The title suggested that it was a book about the evidence for intelligent design through the molecular machines found in the cell. Since I had read Fuz Rana's excellent book The Cell's Design: How Chemistry Reveals the Creator's Artistry, I figured I didn't need another book on cell design. However, Signature in the Cell is really about the origin of life and how all the current data points to a non-naturalistic origin of life. In the book, author Stephen Meyer takes us through the history of origin of life research, beginning with the discovery of the structure of DNA in the 1950s. More...
Genesis One Code
The Genesis One Code is an interesting interpretation of Genesis one, based upon some creative use of extrabiblical sources. In order to reconcile the billions of years that the universe has existed with the six days of Genesis one, author Daniel Friedmann converts "human time" into "divine time" and "creation time." According to Friedmann, a divine day is 1,000 years (Psalm 90:4), making a "divine year" equal to 365,250 years in "human time." Of course, Psalm 90:4 also indicates that 1,000 years are like a watch in the night, being equivalent to only 4 hours. So, one could multiply that number by 6 (or just about any other number). Light travel time
One of the most serious scientific problems for young earth creationism is that of distant starlight and the time it would take that starlight to reach the earth. The crux of the problem is that light travels at a set speed and nearly all the objects in the universe are farther from the earth than the young earth proposed 6,000 year age for the universe. If the young earth model for the universe is correct, we should not be able to see any other galaxies in the universe or even the majority of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. Obviously, we can see those objects, so young earth creationists are forced to do something radical with light travel times. Numerous individuals have proposed that the speed of light has changed, light was created in transit, light travels infinitely fast when coming toward the earth, among others. Young earth creationists ignore the most obvious solution to the problem—light from objects billions of light years away has been traveling for billions of years. Danny Faulkner of Answers in Genesis (AiG) says he has a "new" solution to the problem. Let's look at it. More...
Two new slideshows are available. Since both use extensive animations, make sure you view the slides using PowerPoint's slideshow mode.
Atheists want to create their own form of eternal life and it doesn't look anything like that found in Christianity. In fact, the things they want to do with technology should scare every Christian (and even most atheists). One singulatarian thinks it is okay to completely replace the human species with artificially intelligent robots. More...
The news media wants you to believe that sexual orientation is just the way people are born, like race. In an up-to-date scientific review of the data on sexual orientation, I go through all the scientific data, including the data that was never publicized by the secular media. The data clearly shows that sexual orientation is not genetic and probably not even based upon biological makeup. More...
